Confusion in Mhluzi as residents await test results after learner illness

By Samkelisiwe Mhlanga

Mhluzi residents remain puzzled and anxious following an incident on 17 March where several learners from Elukwazini Secondary School were rushed to hospital after reportedly consuming chips that were allegedly contaminated.

Weeks after the incident, uncertainty continues to grow as results from samples of the chips, water, and other food items allegedly collected for testing, have yet to be released. This delay has left parents and community members searching for answers about what truly caused the sudden illness among the learners.

Speaking to Komati News Flash, local resident Buhle Mhlongo expressed frustration over the lack of clarity. She said many in the community are beginning to question whether the snacks were indeed the cause, suggesting that water contamination could also be a possible factor.

“We just want to know what really happened,” she said. “We were hoping that before schools closed, we would have clear answers as parents and guardians.”

Mhlongo added that the incident caused significant distress among families, with many struggling to focus on their daily responsibilities due to fear for their children’s safety. However, she noted that the school closure has provided temporary relief.

“At least now that schools are closed, we can concentrate at work. The situation was causing panic and anxiety,” she said.

Another concerned parent, who chose to remain anonymous, shared similar fears. She said the incident has left many parents constantly worried about their children’s well-being.
“Every day, we wonder if something like this could happen again,” she said. “Seeing what happened circulating on social media was terrifying, it almost felt like we were having heart attacks.”

She expressed hope that by the time schools reopen, authorities will have identified the root cause of the illness and implemented measures to prevent a recurrence.

The parent also urged the community to remain vigilant, encouraging families to ensure that children consume safe and healthy food. She emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if a child shows any signs of illness.

Efforts by Komati News Flash to obtain official test results have so far been unsuccessful. Adelaide from the National Consumer Commission (NCC) clarified that the organization does not conduct sample testing, adding to the confusion about which authority is responsible for the investigation.

As the community waits for definitive answers, residents continue to call on relevant authorities to urgently release findings and restore confidence in the safety of food and water consumed by learners.
