Ahead of the Easter holiday travel season, Mpumalanga authorities intensified efforts to ensure safer roads. On Wednesday, 1 April, MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, led a major road safety operation at the N4 Middelburg Toll Plaza.
The operation brought together a range of stakeholders, including officials from the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, SAPS, RTMC National Traffic, health officials, road safety officers, and leaders within the taxi industry.
This joint effort reflects the government’s commitment to increasing law enforcement visibility along key travel routes, especially as traffic volumes are expected to rise significantly during the busy Easter period.
Authorities conducted thorough checks focusing on vehicle roadworthiness, driver compliance, and adherence to operating permits. Public transport vehicles were placed under scrutiny, given the critical role they play in moving large numbers of commuters during peak travel times.
Speaking during the operation, MEC Thomo commended all stakeholders for their collaboration. He emphasised the importance of continued joint efforts to improve road safety and reiterated that the operations are not just about enforcement but about saving lives. MEC Thomo urged all drivers and operators to comply with road regulations and put safety first at all times as the Easter holidays approach.
The initiative forms part of broader provincial efforts to reduce road accidents, particularly during high-risk periods like Easter, when long-distance travel and increased traffic congestion often lead to a spike in crashes.
Motorists are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, avoid reckless driving, and remain vigilant on the roads.
With more operations expected across the province in the coming weeks, authorities are sending a clear message: road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
