Every community has that one person who’s always dreamed of owning a successful spaza shop.
Perhaps your business is already operating from a garage, a shipping container, or the front room of your house. You have customers who trust you, but growing your business takes funding, proper registration, and sometimes guidance that many entrepreneurs do not know is available.

For many small business owners, securing funding is often more difficult than running the business itself. Opportunities come and go, and sometimes the biggest challenge is accessing information about the support and funding opportunities available.
On 23 July 2026, the South African government published a step-by-step guide explaining how qualifying spaza shop owners can apply for funding of up to R100,000 through the Spaza Shop Support Fund.
At Komati News Flash, we believe it is important to share this information with our readers, as someone in our community could be looking for exactly this kind of opportunity.
The Spaza Shop Support Fund was launched in 2025 by the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) to support qualifying spaza shops and other food-handling businesses across South Africa. The programme aims to help these businesses improve their operations, become more competitive, create employment opportunities, and contribute to local economic development.
Who can apply?
According to the government’s guide, applicants must be South African citizens or have been naturalised as South African citizens before 1994.
The business must operate in a township or rural area and serve the local community. It must also be registered with the local municipality in accordance with applicable municipal by-laws and licensing requirements.
Applicants must be registered with the South African Revenue Service (SARS). However, businesses that are not yet registered may qualify for a six-month transitional period to meet this requirement.
Spaza shops must also comply with all relevant legislation relating to food preparation, health and safety. In addition, the owner must be actively involved in managing the business.

How much funding is available?
Qualifying businesses can receive funding of up to R100 000.
Funding above R50 000 is provided as a combination of a 50% grant and a 50% loan.
The funding can be used for:
- Shop upgrades.
- Purchasing stock.
- Business training.
What documents do you need?
Before starting your application, make sure you have the following documents:
- A certified copy of your South African identity document.
- Business registration documents.
- Proof of your business address.
- Proof that your spaza shop or food-handling outlet is operational.
- Bank account confirmation documents.
- A business permit issued by your local municipality.
If you are applying for funding of more than R80,000, you will also be required to register with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) within six months of receiving the funding.
How do you apply?
Once you have gathered all the required documents, submit your application through the online Spaza Shop Support Fund application portal.
Before clicking submit, double-check that all the information you have provided is correct and that every supporting document has been uploaded. Applications will then be assessed according to the programme requirements, and applicants may be contacted should additional information be required.

Who receives priority?
Priority consideration will be given to:
- Young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35.
- Women-owned businesses.
- Businesses owned by people with disabilities.
By prioritising these groups, the fund aims to support inclusive economic growth and create opportunities for those who often face barriers to accessing finance. For communities such as Komati, where economic diversification is becoming increasingly important, initiatives like this can play a meaningful role in supporting local enterprise.
Communities such as Komati continue to redefine their future in the era of the Just Energy Transition. While large investment projects often dominate the conversation, sustainable economic growth will also depend on small businesses that are rooted in the community. Every successful spaza shop creates more than just an income for its owner; it keeps money circulating within the local economy, supports families, and has the potential to create employment opportunities.
If you have been thinking about expanding your business or opening one of your own, this could be the opportunity you have been waiting for. On behalf of Komati News Flash, we wish every entrepreneur the very best with their application. We hope this information reaches those who need it most and helps turn small business dreams into thriving local enterprises that will continue to serve our community for years to come.
