The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality has been named South Africa’s top performer in wastewater systems management, achieving an exceptional score of 97% in the 2025 Green Drop Report.

The announcement was made by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) during an official event held at the Sydney Choma Banquet Hall in Middelburg, where municipalities across the country were assessed on the quality and effectiveness of their wastewater treatment systems.

The Mpumalanga Provincial Government has applauded Steve Tshwete Municipality for its outstanding achievement, which reflects a strong commitment to public health, environmental protection, and service delivery excellence.

Wastewater management plays a critical role in safeguarding communities and ecosystems. The municipality’s top ranking highlights its success in key areas, including:

  • Efficient operations: Minimising system disruptions, leaks, and sewage spills
  • Regulatory compliance: Meeting and exceeding national wastewater treatment standards
  • Environmental protection: Preserving water resources, ecosystems, and surrounding communities

The Green Drop recognition not only celebrates operational excellence but also reinforces the importance of sustainable water management practices in South Africa.

Several other municipalities in Mpumalanga were also recognised for significant improvements in their wastewater systems:

  • Msukaligwa Local Municipality rose from 17% to 67%
  • Thaba Chweu Local Municipality advanced from 10% to 57%

These improvements signal meaningful progress across the province, as municipalities continue to strengthen infrastructure, enhance compliance, and prioritise environmental stewardship.

For residents, this recognition brings renewed confidence in the safety and sustainability of local water systems, an essential foundation for healthy communities and long-term development.
