Mpumalanga Taxi Fares Increase as Communities Help Decide Prices

By Samkelisiwe Mhlanga

Taxi fares across Mpumalanga are increasing, but this time, communities are helping decide how much commuters will pay.

Sphiwe Sibanyoni, SANTACO Mpumalanga Secretary has confirmed that taxi fare increases began rolling out in some areas on 1 May 2026, while other communities are still finalising their adjustments.

Unlike previous fare hikes where increases were implemented across the province, Sibanyoni says local taxi associations are now working directly with communities to determine fair prices based on rising operating costs and what residents can realistically afford.

“So far, there have been no complaints. In fact, some residents have asked associations to increase fares, saying they can see operators are struggling with costs,” he said.

He adds that the community-led approach is aimed at keeping taxi services sustainable without placing too much pressure on commuters already facing financial challenges.
